Do you love music, but find that learning an instrument out of reach for you? Maybe it’s too expensive to buy an instrument, or you don’t have the time to practice daily and learn the techniques.
What if I told you that there is an instrument you can study, that you already have in your own home, and you can take huge pleasure from learning the basic ins-and-outs of playing…?
It’s true! It is your own voice.
But… there are a lot of myths out there about Voice, that leave most people thinking “Voice” is something they don’t have, and they can’t do.
So let’s do some myth-busting here. What kind of an “instrument” is Voice, and is it really just for a select few?
Myth 1: I Can’t Sing.
Yes, you can!
You can’t say that; you don’t even know me!
No, I don’t know you. But I do know the One who made you—the Creator God. Did you know that in the Bible, God commands all of the people (over and over again) to sing?
He doesn’t command all of the people to do woodworking, or farm, or write software, or climb mountains—because He made all of us differently, and we are all suited to different things.
But just as He designed all of us to be able to look with our eyes, hear with our ears, and walk with our feet… He designed all of us to be able to sing with our lips!
You see it in the Old Testament, and the New Testament, over and over; every single person is commanded to sing. You see, music is not a special subject for some people and not others, like Astronomy or Medieval Literature. Music is for all people, just like speaking and eating.
You might not die from not-singing like you would if you didn’t eat… but studies have shown that students who study music have higher mental health than students who don’t. So maybe, in a way, our souls might indeed die, just a little bit, from the neglect of beautiful, heartwarming singing.
Yes, some can see better than others, and some can sing better than others. But just as you can train yourself to run faster, if you put a little effort into it, you will be able to sing better.
You are designed to be able to sing!
Myth 2: If you take voice lessons, you’ll end up singing like some opera singer, which doesn’t even sound very nice.
Taylor Swift took voice lessons, and so did most of the other singers you like. Voice lessons did not make them sound weird; voice lessons helped them to be able to have fun with their voices, and to sing the things they wanted to sing freely and with pleasure!
(Well, that one was easy to debunk.)
Myth 3: Voice lessons are only for theater kids.
This might be the biggest myth of all.
We’ve already snuffed out the nonsense that singing a skill a few people have, but many people just can’t do. This is the same thing. If you never learned how to sing, or can’t carry a tune, simple Voice lessons are inexpensive, fun, and easy!
You don’t have to take lessons for years and learn how to sing opera, but a fun small group class for a few months can give you the gift of music-making.
Voice lessons are for everyone who would love to enjoy making music with the built-in musical instrument that God has given them.
Isn’t that a wonderful thought? You have a built-in musical instrument that God gave you, all there, ready to go, right inside you!
You don’t have to pay a dime for it; you don’t have to get it repaired every time something breaks; you don’t have to buy reeds or strings or any other supplies for it.
You have an amazing, beautiful, fun musical instrument that you carry around with you without even thinking about it, all the time.
No, this isn’t something for theater kids. Singing nicely is something we should all learn how to do! It’s simple, and it’s fun!
We can all “do” music. And it doesn’t require renting or buying an instrument to be able to make great music!
So, what do you say? Are you ready to start learning how to “play” your instrument?
